Forward Faster at COP28: Five tips on setting science-based targets and advancing a just transition

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Global greenhouse gas emissions are higher than ever, threatening economies, supply chains and civil society.

As the world aspires towards more ambitious climate action, Forward Faster, a new initiative from the UN Global Compact, shows companies where they can make the biggest, fastest impact before 2030.

To help companies make ambitious impacts, Forward Faster provides a climate action guide with valuable information and tips on how to reach our Global Goals.

Forward Faster calls on companies to set science-based net-zero emissions reductions targets in line with a 1.5°C pathway. The goal? To halve global emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest.

Forward Faster also calls for a just transition by asking businesses to take concrete actions to address the social impacts of climate change.

As COP28 kicks off, the UN Global Compact will assess where we stand on climate action and where acceleration of climate action is needed most.

As we identify gaps, here are five critical steps from the Forward Faster climate action guide to propel your business towards science-based targets and a sustainable future:

  1. Commit to a sustainable future by signing here to set science-based net-zero targets aligned with SBTi's Net-Zero Standard. Once you have signed, the SBTi will conduct a due diligence process and recognize your organization as "committed" at sciencebasedtargets.org. Your commitment will also be featured on the UN Global Compact Forward Faster page

  2. Review sector-specific guidance and projects specific to your organization's industry. SBTi offers valuable resources for companies across all sectors, encouraging them to become climate leaders. Explore SBTi's sector guidance and discover a wide range of resources that will support your business in this effort.

  3. Be ambitious in your target-setting process. Commit to setting both near- and long-term science-based targets to achieve net-zero value chain greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This ambitious approach is vital if we are going to address the current climate crisis effectively.

  4. Engage with your networks and supply chains. Extend your climate commitment beyond your organization by encouraging partners and suppliers to set net-zero targets as well. SBTi provides a helpful guide on getting started

  5. Learn more about how to plan for a just transition by taking a UN Global Compact Academy course.  Environmentally sustainable economies should be promoted in a way that is as fair and inclusive as possible to everyone concerned, creating decent work opportunities and leaving no one behind. Just transition briefs are also available for review, under “resources”

By incorporating these five essential steps into your business operations, you will contribute to meeting global climate goals and position your company as a leader in sustainable practices.
